Serving Around the World

Wherever the United States Armed Forces were deployed, women served–officially and unofficially. Despite the military’s initial fears of deploying women due to risk of injury, capture, death, or feminine health, women stepped up and met the challenge. In 1901, women for the first time became official members of the military–serving as nurses only. In 2015, every job in the military – even combat – was open to women. It is through the dedication and hard work of those early military women that more opportunities opened for later generations of women.
